Since the mountainous region is mostly on the jap Component of the peninsula, the leading rivers are inclined to movement westwards. Two exceptions would be the southward-flowing Nakdong River and Seomjin River.

The southern and western portions of the peninsula have perfectly-developed plains, whilst the eastern and northern elements are mountainous. The very best mountain in Korea is Mount Paektu (2,744 m), by which operates the border with China. The southern extension of Mount Paektu can be a highland identified as Gaema Heights. This highland was predominantly lifted in the Cenozoic orogeny and partly covered by volcanic matter. To the south of Gaema Gowon, successive higher mountains 토토 are located along the eastern coast of the peninsula.
